About asabagna
I go by the name of Asabagna Alatentou, "Asa" for short. I took this name as my African/Spiritual name when I went on a pilgrimage to West Africa in 1997. I visited Senegal, The Gambia and Ghana. "Asabagna" means "hunter" and I received that name during a naming ceremony when I visited a village in northern Ghana. "Alatentou" is Mandingo for "God is gracious" and I received that name from a village Griot in Senegal. I was born in England and my parents are of Jamaican heritage. I spent most of my formative years in Jamaica, but grew up primarily in Toronto Canada. I currently live in Ottawa, the national capital of Canada. I am professionally employed, married, 2 wonderful kids and regularly attend a Pentecostal church. I am a born-again Christian. I do not consider myself conservative or liberal, right-wing or left-wing, centrist etc., or any of the multiple categories that society likes to confine and define people by. However, I do have strong views, beliefs and opinions but I also consider myself open to listening and contemplating other viewpoints. I am a firm believer that "if you don't believe in something, you will fall for anything".
A very inspiring video from a man with obvious fire! I especially appreciate his quote about not relying on government to do anything for us!
We people have to do even more unifying and mobilizing in order to get evne more things done. It’s releasing for us to complain about those who are screwing things up–yes, it gets our rocks off, but after the complaining, work has to be done.
We need to support even more of those brothers and sisters with leadership ability so that they can lead in their respective places. What we don’t need to complain about is the lack of leadership from those who have no leadership ability! It’s the madness of these political talking heads on TV that distract even the most intelligent of us! They’re crazy….like a fox!!
The media keeps presenting fools to us, we consume the foolishness and we get upset at them for giving us foolishness! All the while we ignore those who are ready and able to work for liberation!! It makes no sense to even mention those who cant do anything, when we can talk about and support those who are on fire and are doing work for our liberation!!
That’s what I believe this Afrospear should be about 24-7! There are long lists of blogs that bemoan our lacks and our inabilities. When I come to this blog, it’s not to be dragged down by stories of our CAN’T DO spirit. I can go to other lifeless blogs for that spiritual attack. You know, those blogs that tell us that black Americans are fucked up this way, and broken that way, and doomed the other way. I don’t need that kind of shit.
What I need is stories about who is standing up in the face of those who say we can’t. And actually getting things done!! This is what inspires and motivates me! I bet this is what inspires and motivates other black people from around the world who reads this blog! It’s that spiritual soul food that’s necessary for nourishment in the midst of all kinds of spiritual junkfood! What I want is to be counted among the remnant–those 10 percenters who intend to shake shit up and bring down the oppressors!
This is what I expect from the Afrospear! IMHO, there can’t be too many people working towards our collective liberation. And as black bloggers, our collective goals should be to promote and uplift and shine a light on those freedom fighters wherever they are in this world!!! At least that’s what I expect from the Afrospear. Simple and short.
It’s less than useless to waste precious energy getting mad and frustrated with people who aren’t able to do anything. Let’s spend our energy 24/7 highlighting and supporting people like this brother who is on fire for Africa’s liberation!!
Is this the Afrospear, or a wet rag? I’m just saying.
