African Leadership Academy

Greeting’s Everyone! I first have to say that the post Rant from a BlackYo Da! is a good article. Education is the key. America is already behind in Math and Science. We need to be competitive and it starts with parent’s getting involved.  The story hit home for me because I don’t know where  I would be without my parent’s involvement.

I barely made it out of high school and my undergraduate degree, but because I had parent’s involved in my life, I learned not to give up.

On another note, I need to thank Cedric McCay again. I discovered an education program going on in Johannesburg, South Africa. They are building future leaders. Please not that there is a donate button on the website. I am not recommending to donate or not. I simply saw that it appeared the school is doing positive things with a purpose.

Greeting’s Everyone!

I appreciate the comments from a couple of week’s ago! I had a week off, but want to thank everyone for the patients. I was working on an academic paper in the field of business anthropology. I will be attending a conference in May of 2013 in Shanghai, China.

I got a little off the topic. This quiz is the Historical African American First Quiz. I have to admit that I did horrible! Wow! Learning never stops. Out of 10 questions, I only got 3 right. Yes, that is 30 percent! What will be your score.  Please click on the image above for the quiz or alternatively, please click on the following link:

Shane Sullivan, Tennessee Police Chief, Using Polygraph To Identify Racist Applicants

A computerized polygraph machine

Greeting’s Everyone,

A few current events have been sad to read lately. It was especially sad to hear about Marco McMillian.

On February 20, 2013 our blog featured Asabagna’s story on what he went through at the police department.  A story, in my opinion, that was very powerful and needed to be shared. We have read or probably heard of various stories across the world.

The article by Sheila Burke has intrigued me. This is just one side of the story, but it is an interesting preventative measure. Although, “Polygraphs in and of themselves have a lot of problems,” Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee, said.

What do you think? Is this a small step in the right direction?

Greeting’s Everyone,

I have decided to take a step back this week in the hopes of receiving your opinion. Yes, your opinion matters!

I have seen some great articles on the blog. I have read passionate ideas and I enjoy the fact that we are sharing our opinions, ideas, and thoughts.

I have grown ten times over by reading what people have to say on AfroSpear. I might agree or disagree with the argument, but our digital space is a place of dialogue and learning.

I created a website and again, I want to know your opinion. Please leave a comment on the blog or send me a message on the “Contact” page to let me know what you think. It only takes a second.

Check out the pictures under the “Traveler” section and see my first post under the “Journal” section.

Black Pete, Zwarte Piet: The Documentary

A Documentary About Black Pete

Greeting’s Everyone,

I need to thank Adrianne George who contributes to Black Expat.com. I just happen to find this post and want to share it with you all. I know the topic has also been addressed on Afrospear.com. This is a new documentary that I hope will come out soon!

Click on the image above to see a short preview.

This discusses the African Diaspora community in the Netherlands. This was new information to me personally. I have been to the Netherlands several times, but I haven’t experienced this before. I thought that the initial trailer was very powerful. Shantrelle brings up a good question. Is is racist? Or the Dutch just having fun? You decide.  The Documentary project is by Shantrelle P. Lewis. Again, I am taking resources from Adrianne George as I post the information here.

Shantrelle P. Lewis

A 2012-13 Andy Warhol Curatorial Fellow, Shantrelle P. Lewis is Brooklyn-based curator and a New Orleans native who returned home to assist in the city’s post-Katrina revitalization efforts after a 12-year stint on the east coast. Having received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in African American Studies from Howard and Temple Universities, respectively, her extensive travels throughout Africa, Europe, the United States, South America, and the Caribbean has allowed Shantrelle to experience and witness the manifestation of the African Diasporan aesthetic firsthand. As a curator, Ms. Lewis uses exhibition to respond critically to socio-political and cosmological phenomena through an African-centered lens. Since 2011, Shantrelle has been engaged in research in the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean for a 2015 exhibition at Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI).

Support fundraising for documentary on Kickstarter.

Kinshasha Symphony

23 Saturday Feb 2013

Kinshasa Symphony

Greeting’s Everyone,

Kinshasa Symphony (2010) -CONGO A documentary by German directors Claus Wischmann and Martin Baer, “Kinshasa Symphony” shows how people living in one of the most chaotic cities in the world have managed to forge one of the most complex systems of human cooperation ever invented: a symphony orchestra. It is a film about the Congo, about the people of Kinshasa and about music.

This is one of the best movie that I have seen this year. I was able to see the movie through Alliance Franqaise de Chicago on March 17, 2012.

This movie was about culture, people, a passion for music, and just an amazing skill to utilize resources.

This movie made me realize that I wish I knew another language. It is never to late for me to learn. I just have to figure out when I am going to do it.

I thought that  I would share this for the week.  I look forward to your comments.

Please click on the image for the preview.

Peace,
