Sunday Inspirations: African Girl Goes from Poverty to International Chess Star

It is difficult to survive with your siblings by scrounging for food. But that’s the life that was once lived by Phiona Mutesi out of Uganda. Called “the ultimate underdog” by those who admire her, the young woman has risen to become one of the most celebrated and respected chess superstars in the world. In fact, they are planning to make a Disney movie out of her story.

When she was three, Mutesi’s father died of AIDS. She doesn’t even know her real birthday. “I thought the life I was living, that everyone was living that life,” she said to CNN. “I was living a hard life, where I was sleeping on the streets, and you couldn’t have anything to eat at the streets. So that’s when I decided for my brother to get a cup of porridge.”

The girl said that her lack of exposure led her to think that this was the life she was intended to live. A missionary by the name of Robert Katende met the little girl and started a chess program. He offered a bowl of porridge to any child who would learn how to play.

“It teaches you how to assess, how to make decisions, obstructive thinking, forecasts, endurance, problem solving, and looking at challenges as an opportunity in all cases — and possibly not giving up,” he told CNN. “The discipline, the patience … anything to do with life, you can get it in that game.”

The man immediately noticed how talented the young woman was and groomed her for competition. She said that it took her a year to learn to play well and that she would walk four miles to practice in order to get the food. Eventually, Mutesi became the Ugandan champion and was competing in Russia.

“Chess gave me hope, whereby now I’m having a hope of becoming a doctor and … a grand master,” she said.

Disney has bought the rights to her story, which is one that will inspire millions around the world.

“Museveni abhorring Impunity! Phew!” ‏by Nkwazi Mhango

I will be shocked if the legal fraternity in Kenya and East Africa in general won’t react towards recent salvos leveled by Ugandan Strong man Yoweri Museveni. I still wonder how Museveni talks about legal matters without consulting with his lawyers if he happens to use them.

Museveni’s recent attacks on the International Criminal Court (ICC) must be condemned. During the swearing-in of Kenya’s new president Uhuru Kenyatta, Museveni was quoted as saying, “I want to salute the Kenyan voters on…the rejection of the blackmail by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and those who seek to abuse this institution for their own agenda.”

True, first of all, Museveni’s misguided remarks amount to the contempt of the court. Museveni must thank the Lord that ICC does not deal with criminal matters such as contempt of the court. Otherwise he would have been in big trouble.

Importantly, looking at how Museveni undermined the ICC and Kenyan voters, chances are that he does not respect courts in Uganda. Ironically, if we allow ourselves to become cheap and controversial to think like Museveni, we’ll end up erroneously saying that even Joseph Kony is not a criminal.

Secondly, it makes no sense for a person of Museveni’s caliber to jabber such utterances. How can you salute Kenyans for voting for indictees? Logically, Kenyans did not vote for Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto based on being indictees, but Kenyans whom they thought would govern their country. So too, Kenyan elections were not about rejecting or endorsing ICC. They were about getting a new leadership after the one that was in power lapsed its constitutional term in office. Simple.

I don’t know how the victims of Post-Election Violence felt when they heard Museveni’s remarks. So too, I can’t get it as to why Museveni ignored the plights of PEV’s victims who have never been redressed.

What I abhor is the fact that Museveni attacked ICC pointlessly. Why doesn’t Museveni want to accept the fact that ICC has nary been an ambulance chaser? Whatever issue that is brought before ICC is brought by the way of application from individuals or countries looking for legal settlement. This is what happened regarding Kenya’s ICC case. Kenya went before the ICC seeking its intervention in trying PEV. What is wrong here? Why didn’t Museveni wait for ICC to reach its verdict and say whatever he wants to? Does Museveni think his political statements will help the indictees? Do they need his backing?

It seems that Museveni has sipped a lot from the cup of power so as to think he is above all laws on earth. What a miscalculation! Is Museveni saying what he is saying just because Congolese authorities did not present his case of killing, raping, plundering, torturing innocent people and invading in DRC? It is still early Mr. Museveni. Even Charles Taylor once daydreamed that his crimes would not be brought before light.

What provokes is the fact that Museveni, whose long time autocratic rule has always been associated with corruption, impunity, repression and disregards of human rights. He was quoted as saying, “I was one of those that supported the ICC because I abhor impunity.” Mr. Museveni, try to be serious and sincere. If Museveni says he abhors impunity, why then his consigliore were implicated in multi-million scandals and he nary brought them to book?

To prove how corrupt Museveni is, it came to light recently that his inner circle siphoned millions of dollars donor money. This forced donors to demand to be reimbursed. And to prove the point, Museveni’s government broke into public coffers and paid back the monies as the means of protecting his courtiers and friends involved in this scandal.

Such move was confirmed by the deputy secretary of Treasury Keith Muhanikizi who was quoted as saying, “I am confirming that we have paid the Irish [and] we shall pay the others (donors) who want their money back,” he said, adding: “We are making a lot of progress on that front.” If Museveni ‘abhors’ impunity as he’d like everybody to believe, why did he pay the monies back by even committing another crime of breaking into the treasury, instead of letting judicial process address the issue? Is this the way Museveni abhors impunity by blessing it?

Media in Uganda reported of massive theft involving donors’ money. It is said that at least Shs60 billion ($22.2 million) meant for recovery and development activities in northern Uganda and Karamoja was likely swindled, infuriating donors who, in a meeting with President Museveni, demanded for a refund of their stolen cash.

Regarding Museveni’s remarks on ICC in conjunction with Kenya’s elections, the indictees are still presumed innocent until the court rules otherwise. So too, Kenyans know what is going on. They don’t need any tutor to teach them what it is. I therefore would argue all those who wrongly think like Museveni to respect the ICC and the intelligence of Kenyans.

In sum, Kenyans did not vote along the lines of who is indicted or not, but they voted for those they wanted, believing they would stir and man their nation. Saying that Kenyans voted for Kenyatta and Ruto simply because they’re indicted is to belittle them so to speak. This should not be accepted.

Dear Mr President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni,

Though I am not your voter, I come from the same background like that of your humble voters. I come from the country where voters and all hoi polloi are but sheepish beasts of burden for hoity toitty like in your country. And they like this for playing this role is a great honour for them.

So too, we share nexus in that when you were fighting for Uganda, you had your base and support in my country. We supported you so as to punish our arch enemy Idi Amin, who toppled our best friend Milton Obote. I understand by being of the same origin politically, there are a couple things we know about each other.

I am Tanzanian by blood and water. Like Uganda, our country has been ruled by one party since independence just like your NRM has been doing, though not since independence. Our good ruling party is infallible and holy so as not to be questioned or opposed. So you can see that those accusing you of overstaying are making a grave mistake. You are not alone in this clean game of enjoying power.

I heard your opponents complaining about vote rigging! I was shocked to death. Didn’t they know that without applying this golden rule, no ruler would be in power in Africa? Who is clean in East African Community that did not do the same to cling unto power? Let he be the first to cast a stone.

For reminder, as a precedent, we did just this two months ago in Tanzania. You know what happened? Our money was stolen in the name of charade known as elections. The good thing is: elections were true and fair simply because the ruling junta won thanks to this science of duplicating and multiplying votes.

Therefore, it must be underscored. Rigging is not a crime in Africa. It is but a claim. Just like nepotism, corruption, cronyism, nihilism, rigging will be glorified by seating-duck-like rulers whose actions are only seen in rigging and robbing our treasury. You are not among or one of them.

Mr President, you should not listen to opponents’ frog-like noises. They goofed and thought that voters can decide who should rule them. The role of voters is to humbly vote, but not to question the results even if they are cooked or their voters stolen. First of all, president cannot steal pieces of papers. Such president must be stupid and a dog.

Do you remember this quote of yours, you made just short time before elctions? You said thus: “I like my cows better than this State House, but no one is right to take over. I cannot leave the country to these timewasters. Change from what? From one weakness to another weakness? This is not a beauty contest. 2016 shall be decided according to the strength of Africa.” So those daydreaming that this is your last term in office should think twice.

If an individual, thanks to abusively using the power he stole from citizenry can tamper with the constitution to remain in power, what is there to boot him out of the very power. Pieces of papers otherwise known as votes? Dare you not to daydream that power-hungry wolves will let power go without going to Tahrir Square. The good thing is Mr President you are not among or one of them.

First of all, the so-called voters are ignorant and confused thanks to the hell on earth they are put in. This coupled with intimidation, manipulation, gagging the media or buying it help in elections. And when such impetuses are used you declare elections free and fair. Those who oppose or support opposition’s claims of rigging just brand them the enemies of national security. Don’t they know that national security is all about big men and their cronies to milk the country?

Another thing, use the army and police forces to see to it that people are voting for you, not just because they love you, but just because they fear the chaos your cronies can cause if declared a loser. The role of police and armed force in Africa, except those crooks in Egypt, is to see to it that the big man wins.

So too, these military guys can be used to deliver stuffed ballot boxes that favours you. When anybody tries to question their acts or presence at voting stations, they beat them severely. If those opponents persist you accuse them of provoking security organs which is the hugest crime in Africa. Why should people question infallible organ of the state?

If nobody puts sense you do like Muamar Gadaffi, order the army to bomb and shoot to kill. Who will question this if at all your people are like your cows?

I know Mr President, you are the smartest guy I have ever seen. Nobody except you has enough brain and constitutional right to rule Uganda. Why don’t Ugandans thanks Lord for sending them a messiah in you? My wish is that Ugandans should amend the constitution to make you king or president for life. For you have more experience than any bin-Adam in Uganda, thanks to being in power for over two decades.

How could Ugandans become such stupid to think that you’d lose elections? Those doubting this should look at the constitution of electoral commission. To make sure that nobody is stealing your votes, you appoint your trusted friends and consigliore to see to it that you win with Tsunami-like win as it has always been.

Mr President, I don’t want to waste your time. For you have a lot of thing to do to see to it that Uganda is overtaking the US so as to become the first super power from Africa. I know you as you said, you won’t leave power till this becomes a reality. So too, I am sure, once your dreams become reality, you will become the first president of East African Union so as to help it the way you did to Uganda.

Long live the king in making. We hope to see you crowned come 2016.

“Mr. Museveni, you can retire now” by Nkwazi Mhango

Little bird confessed to me that Ugandan strong man wanted the retiring age to be suffocated from 60 to 55 years! What appalls so as to create amber of anger is the fact that the advocate who, in essence is a grand provocateur, is himself above 60 and he does not seem to think about retiring! This suggestion, though, did not augur well even with his own establishment leave alone Uganda. Is this better than thou or just blind arrogance? Help me out thither.

But how could Museveni bother or get it at all if his military regime has always depended on ex-rebels and their friends? To him the civil service that employs many does not affect his government and family. Museveni thinks he’ll create more jobs by curtailing the age of retirement. Many are baffled and annoyed altogether. Is this the only way of creating jobs? Youths have already urged him to retire a lot of his friends, cronies and compatriots in the rank whose age are above 60.

His heart in his mouth, at this time he’s grappling with trying to convince Ugandans that he’s healthy reason to stand for presidency after 24 years in power. Many would think he’d have heart not to take this suicidal direction. But what is he afraid if at all, is all, in all and above all?Ugandans however would like to have something new. They are tired of being under a state of emergency for decades that aims at cowing them not to dare touch power that Museveni and his cabal has cowered on. The power that has become Museveni’s and his family and cronies.

Though, legally a state of emergency is declared in the main, when there are some natural dangers and in this case, the danger is Museveni himself.

What I very much know about our mumbo jumbos is the fact that they are good at teaching what they failed in. They will forcefully tell you to pay tax so that they can squander whilst they actually don’t pay the same but stealing it!

They will tell you of trimming down expenditure whilst they squander and steal the same money you toil for in the name of oiling the cog of the government full of corrupt elements invited, dined and cloned by them.

They will tell you to take pride in your home education whilst they sent their kids abroad for the same, not to mention hospital and procurement.

They will tell you to invest in your country whilst they steal money and stash it in off-shore banks.

They will tell you everything whilst they do and love nothing as far as the country they advocate is concerned.

They will teach you how to love your country whilst they hate it by selling it to bogus investors which, in essence, are but their agents and business partners behind the curtains.

They will tell you die for your country whilst they put the same on crucifixion.

One thing is obvious. They preach water and drink water not to mention how they are actually double-faced nugatory creatures. Recently in Tanzania, the president was telling people to abide by rule of law. But at the same time, his wife, the first lady, is abusing his office than never before. His son is the “son president”, his wife a “wife president”. Presidency within presidency.

This reminds me of the current Rwandan regime that accused others for committing genocide. When its dirty linens in DRC came forth with true image of what it committed, the same genocide it has accused others of, it started swearing at whoever tells the truth. But remember. The same applauded the same UN it wanted to shun, when it hurriedly declared that genocide was committed against Tutsi that are ruling Rwanda and the same that are accused of committing genocide in the neighbouring DRC.

This reminds me of Gambian oddball Yahya Jammeh who came to power by way of coup d’ etat but does not like to accept that he taught many the same.

It reminds me of King Mswati III who committed adultery so as to pay a bull. But when tables were turned against him, he wanted throats chopped! What a better than thou aggrandizement!

Museveni’s blindness reminds me of Zimbabwean strong man Robert Mugabe, who, in the name of  fake patriotism and delivering on his promises he made over twenty years ago, destroyed his country by negative idealism and racism. So too, the butcher of Malawi, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, used to encourage Malawians to respect and love him whilst he hated and disrespected them. His successor, Bakili Muluzi suffered the same. He came to power under the banner of democracy. But he ended up a traitor that wanted to tamper with the very constitution that brought him in so as to remain in power.

Indeed, hypocrisy is like blindness and mania. It reminds me of the dilemma of  Mwai Kibaki. He hated and fought Daniel arap Moi’s dictatorship so as to usher the new constitution, at whose promulgation he invited the dictatorship and genocide of the butcher of Sudan Omar Bashir.

So too, this reminds of the circus Jacob Zuma is now playing after duping the workers of South African who, in essence, drummed big support for him to come to power after toppling Thabo Mbeki. Currently Zuma is under fire thanks to workers unravelling his ploy.

To spice all this, news that the 84 years Senegalese neo-dictator is intending to standing for presidency again left many paralyzed. We used to wrongly think that Zimbabwean strong man Mugabe is the only centurion to cling unto power. Now we have another geek not to mention Egyptian one Hosni Mubaraka.

Unemployment, bad governance and corruption are the major anathema for Africa’s destitution. To curb them, our rulers must create job instead of slashing retiring age. If this is the must-have remedy, then they must retire themselves first before retiring others that are even younger than them.

Another thing to pull us out of this purgatory is nothing but to practically thwart corruption which, in the main, involves them, their cronies and members of their families.

When he toppled the government in 1986 using Baganda, thanks to entrenching his rebels, as they were referred to then, in Luweero triangle, he promised them heaven after the hell experienced in Luweero massacres. To hoodwink them, buy time and loyalty, he restored their kingdom along with those of Toro and Bunyoro. When it came to Ankole kingdom, Museveni had some reservations. He did not like to become a subject of a traditional king whilst he’s himself an emperor. Since then, nobody knows exactly what made Museveni shelve his own king, if kingdom were a good thing and an “in-thing” Ugandans deserved.

Recent revolts in Kampala that left scores dead and hundreds behind bars act as an early wake up call for Museveni to contemplate vacating presidency in lieu of staying put in his phantasmagoric world. Ugandans are now tired of Museveni and are ready to take on him.

For decades, Museveni has dubiously been everywhere and everything in Uganda: in the seating rooms, bed rooms, even in the pubs. He tampered with the constitution to remain in power by producing and reproducing a host of pretexts all based on naked lies. Right now, Ugandans are tired of misrule and nepotism. This explains why youths in Kampala took to the streets after King (Kabaka) Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II was barred from visiting his subjects in Kayuga.

Though the cause of revolts may be lightly associated with this denial of the right of the king, the truth is, it is but a pretext. Ugandans are using this to take on their tyrant, who as time goes, keeps on changing into many things: from a freedom fighter to a dictator, not to mention his adopted name of “Kaguta” that signifies toughness. Is Museveni still tough really amidst corruption, nepotism, nihilism, humiliation and what not with regards to misrule and abuse of power? Time will truly tell.

By reinstating the king of Buganda, Museveni wrongly goofed believing he’d get away with it. How could he whilst he barred the same from vying for and political post? This is a constitutional right for every citizen of a free country! Did Mutebi accept this token knowing that time would come for him to strike back and get back his constitutional right? Is this what the youths that wrecked havoc in Kampala wanted him to pursue?

Museveni wrongly thinks he can outsmart Ugandans. How, if at all, he turned Uganda into a one party state, heading for a kingdom of emperor Museveni I, a banana republic of course? How could he whilst he is ruining Uganda using his dynasty? Will he neutralize this new awakening as he did with Kiiza Besigye?

Ugandans are not stupid and sheepish as people wrongly perceive. They know their dictator has ruined their country and reputation abroad. Refer to the Congo invasion whereby many innocent people were killed and their property was robbed. The majority in Rwanda will nary forgive him for siring his replica in a new draconic ruler whose struggles to grab power culminated in genocide and the destruction of this tiny nation.

As for Kenyans, Museveni’s attempts to annex Migingo Island do not augur well with them. If anything, in East Africa, he has a good relationship with Tanzania that cloned and exported him to Uganda, after Tanzania had a score to settle with Idi Amin after Milton Obote proved to be a failure.

Aristotle had it that the worst form of inequality, is to try to make unequal things equal. For long, Museveni has posed as a messiah for Ugandans thanks to coming to power under the post-Amin euphoria-cum-phobia. Though Amin was kicked out by Julius Nyerere, Museveni still poses as the one who did it. He has used this to score many credits unworthily. No messiah has ever used excessive force or dubious means to attain his goals, emancipation as it is for Museveni. Basically, any meaningful and true emancipation largely depends on those it aims at emancipating. Ugandans are stating categorically that they don’t need Museveni’s emancipation. Instead, they need to be emancipated from Museveni and his cabal of looters.

Though Mutebi has never put it straight that he aims at political power, shall people want and stand behind him, will he turn them down? He is a true Ugandan: educated, loved, and all in all, capable of unifying them especially at this very hour of need. One does not need a PhD in political science to tell that Ugandans are tired of a one man show. They need a new leader of their choice not that of the gun. They need and deserve a democratic elected leader. They are tired of a ruler superimposing himself on them. The two decades Museveni has been in power are more than enough. That’s why, in reality, things are likely to take a new turn.

Let us face it. Which is better; to have an emperor or a king? To me, Museveni I and Mutebi II are at par. The difference (and a good thing) is, Mutebi has never ruined and mismanaged Uganda. The former became a king by the means of his blood whilst latter by means of his gun. In this showdown, who will triumph between emperor Museveni and King Mutebi?

“Museveni Soiled Julius Nyerere’s Legacy” by Nkawzi N. Mhango

        Museveni                                             Nyerere

LAST month, a symposium to commemorate Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s scholarly legacy was convened in Tanzania. Among the attendees was a less known Nahashon Gacheke Gachihi from Kenya’s Bunge la Mwananchi. When I met this young man in Nairobi a few years ago, he invited me to Jevanjee Gardens for the Bunge la Mwananchi meetings.

Whilst Nyerere is taken for granted at home, in foreign countries, some smart people still take him heartily and seriously. Perhaps this is a fulfillment of a saying by Latin sages: “nemo profita in patria”  (a prophet is not accepted at home.)

For my friend Gacheke attending and speaking in Nkrumah Hall at the University of Dar es Salaam about a great man, was not only a milestone but also a life-long treasure. Who knew that he’d share the same rostrum with bigwigs like Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka and Issa Shivji, among others?

Since the theme of the commemoration was Nyerere’s exemplary scholarly legacy, we would do well to look at his philosophy of the unification of Africa, that is currently sabotaged and abused by some of the people priding to be Nyerere’s disciples.

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni stole thunders at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) during the inauguration of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS). Although he wrongly thought he’d have a smooth ride at UDASA, he ended up awakening sleeping lions! He was cornered on the Migingo Island issue and despite dancing around the point, he openly admitted that the highly disputed Migingo Island is Kenya’s but its water Uganda’s! This proves Museveni’s megalomania and lust for annexing Migingo.

Listen to what Museveni said: “When Mwalimu was retiring, I came here and asked him why he was resigning instead of developing the first East African Community because we’d already overthrown the person that wanted to destroy it. He answered me that “you’ll all develop it.” Now, I ask my colleagues to develop this union.”

Why is Museveni using Nyerere’s popularity for his advantage despite the fact that he contradicts himself? Whereas Nyerere wanted a united East Africa, Museveni wants to rule and usurp its power. How can he step or fit in Mwalimu’s shoes whilst he’s hell bent to annex Migingo? Mwalimu was not bully and assumptive. He was humble and visionary. He lived for others but not others living him as Museveni does. Museveni lives a king’s life while common Ugandans suffer. He spends much hard-earned taxes financing his private army as Ugandans grapple with how to make ends meet.

Look at another goofy and controversial statement by the self-defeating expansionist, Museveni, during the interview with BBC. He was quoted thus, “The Island is in Kenya, the water is in Uganda. But the Wajaluos are mad, they want to fish here but this is Uganda… hii nchi huru (this is a sovereign country). It is written here in English…. from this point; the border will continue to go in a straight line to the most northern point of Suba Islands. Mpaka inazunguka kisiwa (the border surrounds the island)… one foot into the water and you’re in Uganda.” Logically speaking, Museveni’s statement totally shows him glossing things over. It’s but an outright lie. Migingo, including its waters, is in Kenya.

African “Thieves-in-Chief” and their families by Nkawzi N. Mhango

I saw red when Janet Keinembabazi Kataha Museveni, the wife of Ugandan despot, was appointed a minister in charge of the historically impoverished and semi-arid north-eastern Karamoja region her husband ruined.

I sensed something nasty with more magnitude of megalomania than even that of Zimbabwean killer, Robert Mugabe. Even an imbecile like Idi Amin did not attempt this mania.

Astonishingly, the husband is president. Sadly, the wife is first lady, minister and an MP! To add insults to injuries, the son’s an army command of his elite group! Museveni’s younger brother, Caleb Akandwanaho, is senior presidential advisor on defence, not to mention his daughter Natasha Karugire, private secretary to president. This, among others, is an inner-inner sanctum of Museveni.

Hold your breath. There are still other surprises of other swindlers from Nyankole tribe (especially from Ntungamo), fully parked almost everywhere money can be printed and be stolen in Uganda.

When asked why he appointed his wife to ministerial position and if this was not nepotism, Museveni gave hoo-ha and hogwash… that there was no person that would like to take up this post! This is Museveni position. M7 tell it to the birds. They’re so many Ugandans ready to serve under any capacity if you let them.

To the contrary, Mrs Museveni says: she’s sent by ‘God’ to fulfill this “difficult role that others fear to serve- Karamoja”! This is the second time for ‘God’ to send Mrs. Museveni. The first time it’s when she was running for Ruhaama consitituency for which she is an MP. She alleged that she was sent by God to serve the people of Ruhaama.

In other words ‘God’ is Museveni (husband). And this means Uganda now is the kingdom of god on earth.

Watch out. The other day she’ll say:  she’s sent to serve the whole country after her husband (who was sent by the devil known as weapon and greed) ruins it. This is possible. Maybe, this aims at preempting the whole plot. Currently Yoweri and Janet are like yin-yang to Uganda . They are everything and above everything.

Now Museveni in Uganda is everywhere. He is in the sitting room as well as in the bedroom almost in every house!

After turning Uganda into his private estate, Museveni by appointing his wife, he’s broke the record. And methinks, this is paving the way to appointing his soldier son, Major Muhoozi (son of Museveni’s ayah-cum girlfriend, the late Hope from Bunyoro), so that when he’s gone, the son should take over as it happened in DRC, Togo and it will soon happen in Egypt.

In fact, Musevi did appoint his wife in order to measure the waters. He wanted to assess the reaction of Ugandans and the world on this. This though it seems, there are those that doubt it. For, it’s likely Muhoozi and his step-mother might be in power struggle. So, maybe, just maybe, Museveni appointed his wife to assure her of his support or to tell his son: his time is still yet to come.
