Very interesting post. A lot of European descendants are not aware of their “whiteness” because it is not something they HAVE to think about. Being the majority in this society, they have that privilege. We are confronted with it everyday in the media and in our normal lives. Being proud of ones whiteness is silly to me because it is not something that is discriminated against at an economic level. Who controls the media (tv, radio, newspaper, etc)? Who is the majority in congress? When you don’t have to think about race, of course you don’t understand the struggles we face.
I agree with Constance except I find being proud of ones whiteness to be silly based on the fact that whites know where they’re from. The reason black people always say black pride or black power is because we didn’t know which African groups we descended from. Why would one be proud to be white when one isn’t white but French, or Polish, or Italian? Africans sometimes have a hard time identifying with black Americans because many of them don’t identify as such. Most identify by their ethnic group like Nigerian, Igbo, Ghanian etc… Saying one is proud to be white is stupid because they’re choosing to forsake their ethnicity just so they can rub it in black people’s faces and go “ha ha” like an elementary school bully would. Black isn’t just a description for us like white is for them. It became our replacement for Nigerian, Ghanian, Somalian, etc… because we didn’t know who we were(thanks to slavery i.e Europeans aka whites), only what they called us. White pride is idiotic. They don’t have to be white. They can be a myriad of things because they’re able to trace their ancestry back to the many lands of Europe just by asking their grandma or grandpa. Black Americans obviously aren’t so fortunate. The DNA tests we have now will never rectify the damage that was done to us Africans the past 400 or so years. We look at Africans as strangers from a foreign land instead of the family they would have been had slavery never happened. Those people can take their white pride and shove it up their albino asses.
